The Tour de France completed its first week of racing this past Sunday. Normally the first week of a grand tour is relatively straight forward with multiple flat stages that favor the sprinters and a couple of more difficult "hilly" stages for the one day race specialists that are commonly called "roeleurs" or "puncheurs."
This year the first week of racing featured exciting racing every day with the yellow jersey changing hands almost daily. There were big crashes, exciting finishes and general mayem. In other words, an absolutely perfect compliment to the Lucha Vino challenge.
The first challenge of this year's le Tour features a Washington Chardonnay taking on a challenger from Chablis.

Battle in Seattle III - Washington v. Bordeaux
This is the final installment in my End of the World series. It took a bit longer than I expected to finish off these battles. Without any further distractions here is the third matchup in the Battle in Seattle.
When you talk about young wines the French trot out something akin to my Grandfather. So many Bordeaux wines won't even enter the Lucha Vino ring until they have spent a serious decade hiding in the cellar. These Frenchies want to sleep so long that an entire set of world changing events could pass them by. The world could actually... uh, end...

Gold Medal Part II: Washington Cab Franc
Week 2 of the Olympics and another Gold Medal matchup is on tap. Just how do these Olympians feel about not winning Gold? Here is what Gregory Bauge, the World Champion Track Cyclist from France, said about winning Silver in the Men's Sprint finals
"I don't like losing. This is a defeat in a big event, it angers me. This is a failure for me personally," Baugé said. "It is four years that I've dominated in my discipline. I wanted gold, it's a disappointment. I do not train twice a day for this disappointment." (courtesy of cyclingnews).
Now you know how it feels to be the "first loser."
Track cyclists can be a fiesty lot. In their honor this week's matchup features Cabernet Franc - a grape with a spicy personality of its own.
